  • Psychological Trauma / Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Adverse childhood experiences can have a devastating effect on young people. Abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, the death of a loved one, or being involved in a vehicular accident are just some of the reasons children develop PTSD or psychological trauma. At A Child & Family Psychiatry, we have an outpatient program designed to help children and adolescents who suffer from PTSD. Our licensed therapists treat our clients in both individual and group settings. We provide highly effective (evidence-based) interventions for those who have experienced psychological trauma. Each young person in the program has an individualized treatment plan that incorporates the unique needs of each person receiving treatment. Our program is designed to help participants Identify and express feelings. This is a basic and very important skill that children with psychological trauma need to learn and master. Express trauma related feelings and learn how to express anger in a healthier way in words. Become comfortable with your child’s ability to express emotions appropriately by meeting together as needed with your child and provider. Develop confidence and have control over thoughts and emotions if they become overwhelmed. Develop positive self-talk to help children focus on their strengths rather than on the negative aspects of trauma. Recognize internal dialogue; practice simple non-trauma-related exercises. Recognize the distinction and relationship between feelings and thoughts and behaviors.

  • Transgender Youth Services

Most of us never gave much thought to our gender identity growing up. As we navigated our way through childhood and adolescence, we felt comfortable – for the most part – aligning with the expected behaviors associated with our gender. It was a non-issue. Sadly, that’s not the case for some individuals. Some never feel comfortable in their bodies. They deeply believe that nature made a terrible mistake, that they are trapped in the wrong body. This intense “disconnect” with the sex they were assigned at birth can cause significant distress. Life for children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with gender issues can be extremely challenging. Trying to fit in while dealing with a range of emotions that many of us have never had to experience. Parents are often baffled and worried, wanting to ease their child’s pain but not sure what to do or where to turn for help. Treatment specialists at A Child & Family Psychiatry LLC are able to provide information and guidance for families and individuals struggling to find answers.

  • CBT Therapy for ADHD

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that helps patients understand thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. This method can be used for a variety of mental health illnesses including anxiety, depression and more recently ADHD. Although medications can help to alleviate many symptoms of ADHD, impulsivity and re-learning basic daily functioning interactions can prove to be challenging for the ADHD child. CBT is used to help the patient correct the behaviors they have “hard wired’ into their daily functioning. Using a two-pronged approach (medication and CBT) it is the goal of CBT to allow the patient to identify the negative ways they are communicating, socializing, and feeling and learn new positive coping skills to manage their behaviors.
